A party of five, a 4-hour inshore trip, and a box full of keeper snapper. That’s a good morning in Sarasota Bay by any measure.
The Mandwell family came out yesterday for a bay trip — five anglers spread across the boat, all of them getting in on the action. We targeted snapper, snook, grouper, and cobia, and the bay delivered on all four. The snapper bite was the story of the morning, but there were a few other surprises along the way that made this one memorable.

Keeper Snapper — The Main Event
When the snapper are on, it shows. We put the Mandwell family on mangrove snapper early and just stayed on them. These weren’t throwback fish — we were pulling keepers consistently, the kind of snapper that go straight in the box and straight to the dinner table.
Mangrove snapper are one of the most reliable inshore species in Sarasota Bay this time of year. They hold on structure — docks, ledges, mangrove roots, any hard bottom with current running over it — and when you get the bait right and the presentation right, they cooperate. Today they cooperated. The Mandwells left with plenty of fish for dinner, which is exactly how a 4-hour inshore trip is supposed to end.
What makes a big keeper snapper haul satisfying is that it’s not accidental. Reading the structure, knowing the tides, dialing in the bait — it all has to line up. When it does, the bite is as good as anything inshore fishing has to offer.
Snook, Grouper & a Cobia
The snapper weren’t the only fish in the bay today.
We picked up a nice snook mid-morning — one of those fish that shows up on the right cast at the right moment and reminds everyone on the boat why snook fishing in Sarasota has the reputation it does. The black lateral line, the explosive initial run, the way they use every piece of structure they can find to try to break you off. A good snook is always a highlight.
We also worked through some grouper on inshore structure, putting a few in the box alongside the snapper haul. Gag grouper are showing up on inshore bottom throughout July and they’re a welcome addition to any mixed bag.
The wildcard of the morning was a cobia. Cobia in the bay are always a bonus — they’re not what you’re typically targeting inshore, but they show up when conditions are right and they are serious fish. This one got in front of one of the younger Mandwell anglers and they handled it well. A cobia on a 4-hour inshore trip is not something you forget.
What Inshore Bay Fishing Looks Like in Sarasota in July
The Mandwell family’s trip is a good snapshot of what a summer inshore charter delivers in Sarasota Bay right now. On a single 4-hour morning we had snapper, snook, grouper, and cobia — four different species, all caught inside the bay without running offshore.
July inshore fishing in Sarasota Bay is as good as it gets. The water is warm, fish are holding on structure throughout the system, and early morning departures give you calm conditions and active fish before the heat sets in. Species to expect on an inshore bay trip right now:
- Mangrove snapper — holding on structure throughout the bay, reliable keeper-size fish and excellent table fare
- Snook — active around mangroves, dock pilings, and passes; summer is prime season
- Gag grouper — on inshore ledges and structure throughout the bay
- Cobia — occasional bonus fish inshore, especially near structure and baitfish
- Bonnethead sharks — feeding on the flats, exciting and visual
- Redfish — working grass flats and mangrove edges year-round
