Sean brought a party of four out yesterday morning for an inshore trip, and by the time we wrapped up, nobody was disappointed. Tarpon, grouper, snapper, and snook — all of them in a single morning without leaving the inshore water. That’s Sarasota Bay doing what it does best.

A Trophy Grouper to Start
The fish that set the tone for the morning was a big gag grouper — a genuinely large fish that took two people to hold for the photo. When a grouper of that size comes over the rail, the whole boat stops. It was one of those catches that earns its place on the wall of the morning, the fish everyone was still talking about on the way back to the dock.
Gag grouper are available inshore throughout July, holding tight to ledges, dock structure, and hard bottom in Sarasota Bay. Finding the right structure on the right tide is the work — and when it pays off with a fish like this one, it pays off completely.
Tarpon in the Bay
We crossed paths with tarpon during the morning, which is always a moment on an inshore trip. The Silver King doesn’t need an introduction — when one is hooked up, every rod goes down and every eye is on that fish. Tarpon are one of the most powerful inshore species in Florida, and July is one of the best months to encounter them in Sarasota Bay.
They’re catch and release, but the fight is the whole experience. The initial run, the jumps, the way they use the current and structure to try to shake the hook — there’s nothing like it in inshore fishing. Sean’s party got to feel it firsthand.
Snapper and Snook Round Out the Bag
The snapper bite was consistent throughout the morning. Mangrove snapper are one of the most reliable catches in Sarasota Bay right now and they showed up on cue — keeper-size fish on the right structure with the right presentation. Between the grouper and the snapper, the box was in good shape before the morning was half over.
A snook made its appearance as well, which completed what turned into a seriously well-rounded four hours on the water. Snook are active in the bay throughout July, feeding near structure and moving with the tide. Catching one on an already-strong morning puts the whole trip over the top.
